COMMENCAL is probably the only brand to focus as much on high-end bikes for children as for adults. Each year, the range is refined but it also expands! To better understand the how things work, here are some handy points:
- The RAMONES range will accompany your child from the age of 2 throughout all stages of their growth with 12'', 14'', 16'', 20 ‘' and 24’' versions! These bikes are designed to be playful yet solid or in other words, they are ideal to start mountain biking on and also enable their first off-the-beaten-path experiences!
- The META family now hosts a Junior version and more models in 20 and 24 inch sizes. Here we have a well built frame for adults already (META HT) and a build kit that has had care and attention. It's high-end and equipped to ride like a true mountain bike. We’re talking a pure mountain bike, that is of course an enduro bike which really climbs and descends!
- The SUPREME models (20'', 24'' and Junior) are models designed for downhill, excel in the bike park and to use on any terrain. Dual suspension is featured on all models and is fully thought through for their small frames... It's never too early to take on Rémi Thirion! This year's big change is the transmission for the 24'’ and the JR. It comes int he form of SRAM 1x11 and therefore is suitable for enduro days. A definite plus!
There is no minimum age to start cycling, well almost! Once the child reaches 90cm and up to 105cm ie. Around 2 years old means they can ride on the RAMONES 12''. At this age, the pedals are useless, they learn ‘on their feet’ and therefore they learn balance with ease. An added bonus is that it’s ready to go to add a rear disc brake as soon as he starts picking up too much speed!
When your child measures around one metre (between 95cm and 110cm to be precise), they are ready for a RAMONES 14. Then you need to answer the question; with or without pedals? Within the realm of the RAMONES 14, you can choose to use it purely as a push bike or with pedals, the choice of Kings!
Is your child still growing and do they measure between 105 and 120cm? If so, they must now run 16 inch wheels! The frame geometry of the RAMONES 16 is pretty sloping and its identical in design to the top models of the brand, offering a very distinctive MTB look. Grips, brakes, saddle, everything is adjusted to their size and pedalling, drifts and jumps become a daily passion (if that’s not already the case...).
Choosing the right frame for your child is important mostly to ensure that they will have the right bike to perform all those adventures on that they already have in mind! For this 20 inch version, for children measuring between 115 and 135cm, you have the choice between the following;
-The RAMONES 20, an ideal bike for their first foray into bumps & jumps and will certainly give them the MTB bug! Front suspension, perfect geometry and ideal components.
-The META HT 20 is ideal for those wishing to build their skills at the top with even more MTB specific equipment. A high-end frame, shortened base for even more manoeuvrability, hidden cable routing and RIDE ALPHA 50mm spring forks, everything is thoroughly thought through for these featherweights. A RIDE ALPHA cockpit equipped with 580mm disc brakes (160mm) with levers made especially for their smaller hands complete this 100% mountain bike set-up.
-The SUPREME 20 is the full suspension DH model. It is a pure DH bike on which your child can have fun and quietly evolve in a bike park and downhill environment. The RIDE ALPHA fork was developed specifically for this bike and every detail has been adapted so that the child is immediately at ease. 100mm rear suspension and 80mm at the front (because it enhances the bike too) and a single speed transmission avoids gear issues (however, it is possible to mount a rear derailleur). Greens, blues or reds, they will quickly progress!
Note: Choosing the right bike for your child is like sending them to the right school! Like the 20 inch version, we offer three different models for children measuring between 128 and 150cm. At this age, they’ll fire down anything without hesitation most of the time!
-On the RAMONES 24 they can go and have fun with friends in the garden, out and about on the street and why not the forest too? There’s no worries concerning the solidity of this bike, everything has been taken into account so that the most boisterous will tire before the bike!
-The META HT 24 is a true mountain bike and can even be classed as a mini enduro hard tail! The frame has the same finish as our top of the range adult models (integrated cables, ultra neat finish) and the RIDE ALPHA spring fork has 70mm travel. Your budding champion might be able to keep up with you!
-The SUPREME 24 is a DH version for the kids that are already loving MTB! In recent years this model has become the benchmark in kids DH mountain biking. It’s easy for them to handle, the suspension is easily adjustable and the bike park becomes a real playground. Remember they need protection so you can take them on the best shaped tracks. Et voila!
At HQ, the Junior is known as the missing link. So, why do we offer such sizes in the META HT as well as in DH? Well, the goal was to fill the gap between a 24 inch bike and an adults size S which is made with too much travel and specific geometry for fully grown bodies, therefore far too great for these teenagers. For the wheel size there was some controversy and debate in the office… We opted for a 27.5'' format, mainly because of the near total extinction of the manufacture (wheels, rims, tyres & forks) of standard 26'' parts. There’s no need to worry however, the benefits of the 27.5'' have been extremely appreciated and there’s no downside according to Louis Coubes and Aaron Querol who currently ride the SUPREME JR. As with the SUPREME 24, the JR is so lightweight, low, handy and easy. Just what they want!
META HT JR is the newest arrival! It was designed in the same context as the adults META AM HT but simply for youngsters who wish to evolve on a true enduro hard tail. This JR version has 27.5'' wheels with 120mm of travel and a frame ideal for small sizes. As with META HT range, the geometry is ideal for trail riding and suitable for trying real enduro tracks!
